Olen ikka loll. Ei tea, kui mitu korda olen lugenud Jakobsoni "Linguistics and Poetics" ning ei ole saanud aru ühest lihtsast asjast: nagu teisedki, arvasin, et siin on põhiline keele funktsiooni välja toomine ja nendele rajatud kommunikatsiooniskeem. Põhiline on aga miski muu. Nimelt et luule universaalsus, st üks või teine värsivorm eksisteerib igas teadaolevas ühiskonnas, ei ole üksnes kulturoloogiline, vaid lingvistiline fakt: keele täisväärtuslik eksistents ei ole luuleta võimalik. Selles mõttes ei ole kuus keelefunktsiooni võrdväärsed ega sama autonoomsuse tasemega. Poeetiline funktsioon on väga lähedane metakeelsele, ja selles mõttes pole juhuslik, et esimesed grammatikad tekkisid mitte argikõne ega proosateksti kodifitseerimisvajadusest, vaid luule kirjeldamisest. Sarnaseid ideid kohtab Toporovil, kes analüüsib sanskriti poeetikat: grammatika tekib luule kirjeldamise vajadustest, poeetika aga tekib grammatika baasil. Veel kategoorilisemalt väljendub Watkins (How to kill a dragon), kelle jaoks indoeuroopa luule ongi grammatika spetsiifiline vorm.
